My name is Lisa Geraci-Ruppert and
I am 33 years old. I was approximately 232 pounds and 5'
3-3/4" when I started with Dr. Gabriel and Long Island
Bariatric Center. I was suffering from multiple injuries
that had greatly reduced my mobility, a 2 liter a day soda
habit, and I also was normally eating only 1 large meal a
day. I had gained so much weight that I could barely
function. I was getting shots for pain regularly in my
feet for heel spurs and bunions. I was on the borderline
for knee replacements on both my knees. My life was
revolving around what doctor I had to see next. I was
going down hill fast. My parents are both morbidly
obese and my father died from it and organic heart disease at
the age of 51.
I spoke with Dr. Gabriel on the
phone and we discussed the surgery before I went to the
Center. He put my mind at ease with all the information he
gave me. After all the tests that the LI Bariatric Center
sent me for, it was discovered that I had very high
triglycerides and cholesterol levels, a fatty liver, and
gallstones. LI Bariatric Center got me approved for my
surgery and I was well on my way to recovery.
On August 7, 2002 I had my
Lap-Band put in and my gallstones taken out. Dr. Gabriel
really didn't want to do both at the same time, but I wanted to
get it over with and I am so glad that he did it for me. I
had a bit of extra pain, but all in all, I got to start losing
weight right away instead of waiting for a second surgery.
I had retained water in the hospital from the IV so it took me
about a month and some water pills to get on track, but it has
been a breeze since. I have minimal scars and they are
fading already. I started the Optifast shakes a little
earlier than what was required so I lost approximately 14 pounds
before my surgery. I still use them as a supplement
occasionally for a breakfast or a lunch on the run and they have
also helped with the great results that I have made.
Well, I am now 162 pounds and
I'm still losing and it has only been a little over 7
months. I went from a BMI of 40.2 to 28.1. I have my
life back and I feel great. The pain from my prior
injuries have been reduced and I haven't had shots in my feet in
many months. All my blood levels have gone down and my
health has been great. I bought my first Jr's size 11
jeans and it felt awesome. No one believes me when they
see my before picture, that it was only 7 months ago. I
feel and look like a new person thanks to this wonderful device,
my awesome surgeon and the support and diligence of LI Bariatric
Center.

As a personal note I want to
thank you, Dr. Gabriel, for all of your good humor, great
bedside manner and encouragement throughout every step of the
way. It is wonderful to have a doctor so interested in
your well being, that you can talk to like a real person and not
just a care giver. I feel very lucky to have had you as my
surgeon. I hope I have made you proud of your excellent
work.
To Dory Ferraro, you Bariatric
Center has been a wonderful experience for me. From my
first day, I felt accepted and understood. Your advice and
guidance has helped to keep me focused and encouraged, and your
diligence in getting me approved so quickly was amazing.
Thank you for bearing with all my stupid questions with great
humor.
You are both outstanding
professionals and I am honored to have had the opportunity to
work with both of you to achieve my goal of a healthy life.
Sincerely,
Lisa Geraci-Ruppert
