Dr. Gabriel received his
undergraduate degree from King's College in three years time.
He attended New York College of Osteopathic Medicine and
completed his residency at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center,
affiliate of Weill Medical College of Cornell University, in
Brooklyn, New York. His laparoscopic skills were observed
and recognized by James "Butch" Rosser, at a
laparoscopic skills and suturing course where he was awarded the
TOP GUN award for that course. Consequently, he was
invited by Dr. Rosser to spend time as a post doctoral fellow at
Yale. It was at the Yale Endo-Laparoscopic Center that Dr.
Gabriel received his advance training as a fellow in minimally
invasive surgery.
As a disciple of Dr. Rosser,
Dr. Gabriel has amassed worldwide achievements. During his
appointment as an Attending and Clinical instructor of surgery
at Yale University School of Medicine, he was responsible for
mentoring many residents and attendings in the art of
laparoscopic suturing. Dr. Gabriel has also developed a new
concept and learning device called the G.R.I.P. (Gabriel/Rosser
Inanimate Proctor) for teaching laparoscopic suturing which will
be featured in the second edition of "The Art of
Laparoscopic Suturing", and was debut at the Medicine Meets
Virtual Reality (MMVR) 2000 meeting. This device is
currently being utilized to gather important data on
laparoscopic skills and suturing, and a poster "The
Use of a “Hybrid” Inanimate Trainer in an Established
Laparoscopic Skill Development Program"
has been accepted for presentation at the Society
of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) annual
meeting in Denver, CO, 2004.
Dr. Gabriel has been an
integral part in the production and publication of the
"Minimally Invasive Approach to Common Bile Duct
Stones" CD-Rom minimally invasive series and is currently
involved in other CD-Rom educational projects. Besides
these, he has co-authored a chapter in Surgical Clinics of North
America and a chapter in the World Journal of Surgery. One
of his most impressive achievement is a project undertaken
with Discovery Health Channel. Dr. Gabriel was deployed to
a small clinic in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. His
responsibilities included establishing a high speed data link
with a portable satellite communications (SAT-COM) unit for the
featured telementoring program, training and mentoring local
surgeons for advanced laparoscopic procedures, helping with the
production of the documentary, and operating as well as
assisting advanced laparoscopic surgery. His documentary
responsibilities culminated with the deployment of wireless
aerial videography from a remotely piloted aircraft, a platform
for extreme telemedical applications as developed by Dr. James
Rosser. This project has been recognized and was worthy of
a Smithsonian award in April 2000.
In 2001, Dr. Gabriel moved
back into the greater New York area where he joined a
private surgical practice. His passion for laparoscopy remains
unbridled. At Franklin Hospital, an affiliate of the North Shore
University Hospitals, he was the first and only surgeon to
perform laparoscopic
colon resections, laparoscopic anti-reflux procedures, and
laparoscopic adrenalectomies. This
trend of advanced minimally invasive surgery is not only being
felt at Franklin Hospital, but also at Beth Israel Medical
Center - Kings Highway division and Brookdale University
hospital where Dr. Gabriel has performed numerous advanced laparoscopic cases,
including laparoscopic adrenalectomy, splenectomy, large
ventral hernias, small bowel resections, colon resections,
anti-reflux procedures, and other unusual cases. With the
recent trend of surgery for morbid obesity, Dr. Gabriel was one
of the first surgeons to perform the laparoscopic gastric
banding procedures in Long Island and helped initiate the Lap
Band program at North Shore University Hospital at Syosset. He
was also an integral part in developing the Bariatric (Weight
Loss) Surgery program and Unit at Brookdale Hospital where he
performed the first laparoscopic gastric bypass as well as
laparoscopic gastric band.
Dr. Gabriel currently holds a
position as Chief of Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery at Kingsbrook
Jewish hospital in Brooklyn, where he has already performed
laparoscopic colon resections. Dr. Gabriel has been
currently appointed as Director of the Comprehensive Health and
Obesity Management Program (C.H.O.M.P.), which offers
conservative and surgical weight loss options for patients.
Dr. Gabriel also holds a
position as the Chief of Minimally Invasive Surgical Education
at St. Vincent's Hospital in New York. He is credited for
performing the first mini-laparoscopic cholecystectomy at St.
Vincent's with his signature three-port technique. He is well
known as an educator in minimally invasive surgery and is a
consultant, speaker and proctor for the leading laparoscopic
industries.
Dr. Gabriel is also involved
with performing advanced laparoscopic surgery abroad
particularly in the Dominican Republic, Tijuana, and Cancun. He
is in an elite group of surgeons who can perform laparoscopic
gastric banding in Cancun.
Now, Dr. Gabriel along with Dr.
John de Csepel have joined forces to form Laparoscopic
Associates of New York, LLC, a surgical practice able to offer
the most advanced minimally invasive surgical procedures
performed today.
